Our work exchange experience is becoming increasingly frustrating. The jobs become weirder and weirder each day and there is a definite lack of communication of duties, most likely lost in translation, between the workers and the Chinese hostel owner. Bret and I are cold in the Auckland rain, leading into winter, our new room is damp and mildew-smelling, and we’re tired. Today, to get away from the drama of the hostel, we decided to totally treat ourselves to a movie.
We took a pretty long walk to the Newmarket district to SkyCity Cinema to see a movie called The Boat That Rocked. A few weeks ago, when we first arrived in Auckland, I saw a brochure about the movie, from the creator of Love Actually, with a star-studded cast (I sound like a movie announcer), including our new favorite Rhys Darby. We waited until the movie came out here in NZ, and were practically first in line. We splurged and bought popcorn, ice cream, and a Coke, and even smuggled in our own treats, gummies and choc covered sultanas (raisins). We got comfy in the oversized plush seats of the old school theater and totally vegged out!
The movie was about a pirate radio station in the 60s in England. The soundtrack was rocking and the movie was lighthearted, funny, and sweet. I really liked the movie and was excited to talk to people back home about it. NZ sometimes gets movies well after they open in the U.S. (all of the previews for this movie were for Fall 2008) so we figured we were watching something that was released a while ago in the States. However, upon researching IMDB when we got back, we discovered that it wouldn’t be released until 28 August 2009 in the United States! Yay! We’re finally ahead of the game! We took the long walk back to the hostel, enjoying the shimmering, ‘star-studded' night sky.
